On Sunday, the team from Vinomofo, hundreds of volunteers and winemakers from all over the McLaren Vale came together to raise $36,000 for the Hutt St Centre to support Adelaide’s homeless.
Last week, Andre Eikmeier from Vinomofo responded to call out from a McLaren Vale vineyard offering 3 tonnes of Shiraz vines that his team wasn’t going to be able to pick to anyone who wanted them, all he asked for in return was for people to make a donation to Hutt St Centre. Andre was struck with the idea to rally the community together and make a wine from the vines, with all proceeds being donated to Hutt St Centre.
Through call outs on social media, Andre and the team at Hutt St Centre got a winery on board to make the wine and asked the public to sponsor a case with all proceeds going to Hutt St Centre. They called for volunteers to come down on Sunday and help pick the vines and were overwhelmed with the turn out.
Hundreds of volunteers turned up on Sunday to support the Homeless Grapes Project. The pickers ranged from 8 year olds to 80 year olds, including wine literary luminary Philip White and winemakers from all over the Vale turned up to help drive tractors and guide the picking. There were German backpackers, French vintage hands and locals in overalls. It was a celebration of diversity, all drawn to the cause.
At the end of the day, they had sold all the cases and raised $36,000 for the Hutt St Centre – a huge achievement for a cause that began on Monday night! From the proceeds raised, Hutt St Centre could now supply 15,000 meals, basic human services for 150 people or jobs for 30 people who without a job are forced to sleep rough, in a car or temporary accommodation.
