Holdfast Bay Council Offsetting Vehicle Fleet

Holdfast Bay Council is now offsetting 100 per cent of the greenhouse gas emissions from its vehicle fleet.

Holdfast Bay Council is now offsetting 100 per cent of the greenhouse gas emissions from its vehicle fleet.

This represents 383.3 tonnes of greenhouse gasses and from a greenhouse gas point of view it’s equivalent to taking all 70 Council vehicles off the road for a year.

CEO of the City of Holdfast Bay Justin Lynch said that Council has achieved this through the purchase of carbon offsets derived from a Federal Government registered project to protect more than 12 hectares of remnant bush land in Queensland (the Brigalow Bioregion).

“This region was previously earmarked for clearing by farmers and includes ecosystems rich in flora and fauna diversity, with some areas assessed as essential habitat for vulnerable, rare or threatened species. Unfortunately there are currently no SA sites approved under a nationally recognised scheme.”

Council’s HEAT Fund was used to fund this project, and is amongst other projects funded that include efficient light and sensor upgrades at various Council buildings and a 100kL rainwater tank at Brighton Caravan Park.

Mr Lynch said “This is an exciting move for Council in our efforts to be a good corporate citizen and it opens the doors for future projects that may include such things as alternative energy production, energy-efficient public and street lighting, and alternative water supply systems.”
