Ahead of this week’s Clipsal 500 in Adelaide, Holden V8 Supercar drivers Garth Tander and James Courtney made a special appearance at the Leukaemia Foundation Village yesterday, meeting patients before driving motorsport fans Carolyn Chirgwin and Megan Halliday to their appointments at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

The visit was a part of Holden’s ongoing support of the Leukaemia Foundation, which includes a fleet of 17 Commodores for the foundation’s Patient Transport Program.

Tander, who is also a Leukaemia Foundation Ambassador and volunteer driver in the Patient Transport Program, said he’s passionate about supporting the foundation.

“The Leukaemia Foundation provides an enormously valuable service to people with blood cancer and I want to assist in as many ways as possible,” said Mr Tander.

“It was great to meet all the patients at the village today and to have the privilege of taking Carolyn and Megan to their appointments.”

Leukaemia Foundation General Manager for SA and NT, Simon Matthias said Holden’s fleet of 17 Commodores has helped provide vital service to lymphoma and myeloma patients across Australia through the Patient Transport Program.

“Each year the cars Holden provides transport over 4500 blood cancer patients to and from treatments and over the last 13 years the Holden sponsored cars have travelled over five million kilometres – that’s equal to one hundred laps around the globe,” said Mr Matthias.

“Transport to and from treatment is vital for our patients and one of our most important services. Low immunity from treatment often means patients need a specialised transport service. We need these Commodores to help more patients arrive at treatment safely.”

The Leukaemia Foundation is the only national not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the care and cure of patients and families living with leukaemia, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders. Each year, the Foundation supports thousands of Australians by providing free services to patients and their families, and invests millions in cutting edge research to develop better treatments and cures.
