HeartKids SA is calling on South Australians to support their major annual fundraising event, the ‘Tiny Tickers’ Gala Dinner.
Every year, HeartKids SA supports dozens of
families from South Australia and the Northern Territory who need to travel to Melbourne for potentially life saving surgery for their children… in some instances with just a few hours notice.
Childhood Heart Disease (CHD) is one of the most common birth abnormalities affecting one in 100 children, with more than 2,000 Australian children born with CHD every year. CHD is also a major killer of Australian children under the age of one.
HeartKids SA General Manager, Mr Jonathon Robran, says with minimal government funding the organisation couldn’t offer the support it does to families without the generosity of the South Australian business sector and the wider community.
“The significance of our fundraising efforts – headlined by our annual Tiny Tickers Gala Ball – just can’t be underestimated,” he says.
“Quite simply we couldn’t do what we do, without the public’s support.”
Over the past five years, HeartKids SA has provided more than $500,000 of financial support to more than 700 families with accommodation and flight assistance, meal vouchers and if required, emergency financial support.
“The stress on families forced to travel interstate for major treatment is enormous,” he says.
”Relocation to Melbourne can be anywhere from a two week period up to many months at a time. If the child undergoes a heart transplant, relocation can be up to a year. This places incredible emotional and financial strain on our families.
“The more money we can raise, the more families we can continue to support as they face an incredibly challenging time with their children.”
