Adelaide City Council is encouraging footy fans heading to the Showdown this Saturday to make the most of football’s new home in the city and make a day of it.

The game starts just after 4pm, giving people plenty of time to come in early and enjoy the many great places and attractions in the city. There will also be time afterward to enjoy the city’s nightlife.

Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood is looking forward to welcoming football to the CBD and will be personally welcoming the Crows and the Power on Saturday.

“The footy games will bring more people into the city, which will create an added energy and buzz to our streets. I’ll be heading into the Mall and Elder Park to welcome both teams to their new home on Saturday afternoon.

“I’d encourage fans to come in early and also stay around after the game and enjoy what the city has to offer, as well as beat the traffic.

“There’s plenty to do – go for a meal in the foodie parts of town such as Gouger and Rundle Streets, wander through Rundle Mall, check out some of the new small bars tucked away in laneways, take your kids to the art gallery or museum, visit the Central Market or explore the Riverbank. There’s something for everyone,” Stephen said.

Game goers have several different options for getting into the city.

Catching public transport to the Oval will be easier than ever. The new Riverbank Bridge connects the Railway Station and the tram line to the Oval.

Regular Adelaide Metro bus services will run as per existing timetables in the lead up to and after AFL games and the Adelaide Oval Footy Express will operate on AFL game days, dropping people in King William Road close to the Oval.

Ticket holders who want to spend time in the city before or after the game can also get free transport on regular public transport services if they show their ticket.

Crows and Power members can apply for season parking passes for several Council-owned UParks, guaranteeing them a space. Casual parking from $6 a day will also be available at selected UParks including Topham Mall and Light Square which are both a short walk to the Oval via the new footbridge.

Parking around the Oval will be limited, and two hour parking restrictions will be in place on event days within 1.25 kilometres of the Oval.

In addition, limited parking will be available on War Memorial Drive West, entry via Park Tce, for a $15 fee. This is the ideal location for those wanting to have a barbecue before the game.

“This is truly an exciting time for the city as we enter a new era with the redevelopment of Adelaide Oval. It will be transformative for Adelaide as more people come into the city on a regular basis, bringing economic benefits and fresh activity and energy,” Stephen said.
