Head To Glenelg For The 180th Proclamation Day Commemoration & BBQ

The South Australian Governor and Premier will be among the many South Australians to commemorate the 180th anniversary of the Proclamation of South Australia.

The South Australian Governor and Premier will be among the many South Australians to commemorate the 180th anniversary of the Proclamation of South Australia at the Old Gum Tree Reserve in Glenelg North from 9.15am on Wednesday 28 December.

His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le, Governor of South Australia, will read the Proclamation of South Australia at the traditional ceremony hosted by the City of Holdfast Bay.

The event will also feature a special address by Premier of South Australia, The Hon. Jay Weatherill MP, and performances by the City of Holdfast Bay Concert Band and Glenelg Brass Band. City of Holdfast Bay Mayor, Stephen Patterson, said 28 December is an important date in South Australia’s history.

“Glenelg is the first mainland settlement of our state so Proclamation Day holds a special place in Holdfast Bay’s annual calendar, but it’s really a state-wide commemoration for all South Australians.

“We love to see people coming together each year at the Old Gum Tree to commemorate this important piece of our history, and we invite people who haven’t experienced the traditional ceremony before to join in and participate this year, and stay for a free community barbecue and live music in the park,” he said.

Mayor Patterson said entry to the event is free and everyone is welcome.

“Actually standing beside the historic arched Old Gum Tree and hearing our Governor read the Proclamation document brings that distant moment much closer. It helps you reach back through those 180 years and imagine all the people who were present on that day, and the incredible range of emotions they must have been feeling.”

Mayor Patterson said the official event will wind up in the Old Gum Tree Reserve around 12.30pm but activities will continue with events and activities in Glenelg, including the Bay Sheffield race event.

“The first Proclamation Day sports carnival was held in 1886 to mark our state’s 50th anniversary and this proud tradition continues with the Bay Sheffield still drawing thousands to Glenelg.

“Plus there’s a fantastic range of events and attractions along the foreshore, and Jetty Road is vibrant with most cafes, restaurants, bars and shops open for trade.”

Please note, road closures will be in effect: side streets surrounding the Old Gum Tree Reserve in Glenelg North will be closed between 7am and 1pm on Wednesday 28 December for the Proclamation Day ceremony.
