In the midst of the Adelaide Fashion Festival, The Art Gallery of South Australia welcomes an exclusive haute couture fashion collection. On Tuesday night exhibition curator Pamela Golbin, event program curator, Mitchell Oakley Smith and Art Gallery decorative arts curator Robert Reason gave us an insight into Fashion Icons: Masterpieces from the collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs at the Fashion Icons in Conversation AFF 2014 event.

Drawn from arguably one of the biggest ‘closets’ in the world, this exhibition brings over 90 original garments from over 50 of the world’s leading fashion designers to Adelaide. Pamela passionately described the cultural and historical significance of the carefully selected garments within the collection. From the inception of Christian Dior in 1947, the beginning of contemporary fashion, the collection spans across eras to emulate the 1950s, 60s, 70s, 80s and feed into the 21st century.

Whilst unable to decide on any particular favourite garment of the collection, Pamela discussed “extraordinary” pieces, including the Christian Dior bar suit and the most expensive Chanel dress ever created, within the Fashion Icons exhibition. She highlighted that it is a first on many levels in order to meet the audiences’ growing hunger for the phenomenon that fashion continues to become.

Fashion Icons is exceptionally unique as it displays the stunning, original prototypes of the garments, some both male and female pieces, outside of their glass cases. Images and videos are also featured to give movement to the sculpture-like pieces and help them to come alive as they appeared in their time on the catwalk.

The exhibition opens this Saturday, October 25 at The Art Gallery of South Australia, runs until February 15 2015, and includes additional events and tours. Tickets are on sale now (http://fashionicons.com.au/tickets/buy-tickets/). Don’t miss this EXCLUSIVE to Adelaide world-class exhibition!
