Harris Scarfe celebrates 160 years in South Australia

Harris ScarfeIconic South Australian retailer, Harris Scarfe celebrates a 160 year relationship with South Australia, this August.

South Australia is the birthplace of Harris Scarfe opening its doors in 1849 when Mr George Peter Harris and Mr John C Lanyon formed a partnership to found Lanyon & Harris. From there the still standing Grenfell Street store was purchased in 1877 by the newly formed GEO.P.Harris Scarfe & Co and evolved in 1920 to the Harris Scarfe name we know and love today.

In 2002, Harris Scarfe’s launched their new logo, new signage and upgraded all stores incorporating their dynamic and proud South Australian history.

“160 years is a fantastic achievement for any business and Harris Scarfe takes particular pride in this milestone,” says Harris Scarfe Managing Director, Joe Barberis.

“As we eagerly embrace change, continuing to engage and excite our customers for the next 160 years, this is the true cause for celebration. It is both our shared history and our shared future that we will celebrate this August – 160 years and counting.”

Today there are 40 Harris Scarfe stores across South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory and Queensland, employing over 2,000 staff nationally.

Over the next month, Harris Scarfe will invite South Australians to celebrate with the retail stores promotion of fabulous brands at reduced prices, store events, giveaways, fashion extravaganzas and some delightful ‘blasts from the past.’

“We celebrate 160 years to remember and honour our heritage,” says Joe Barberis.

“As we work towards our shared future, we are equally as excited to announce dynamic new developments, opportunities and savings for our customers.

“We are thrilled to welcome the kids of today as loyal Harris Scarfe shoppers of tomorrow – 160 years and counting.”
