Gurrumul Wins An ARIA For Critically Acclaimed Album

It is lucky number thirteen as Gurrumul snags another ARIA Award, this time for his critically acclaimed album, The Gospel Album…

Singer songwriter Gurrumul has received a lucky 13th ARIA Award, as his third studio album ‘The Gospel Album’ took out Best World Music Album in one of four ARIA Fine Arts Awards categories.

Gurrumul is now the proud recipient of five ARIA Awards as a solo artist and eight as a member of powerful 90’s Indigenous group, Yothu Yindi.

In discussing the significance of the Award, Gurrumul’s long-time collaborator and musical producer Michael Hohnen said today, “Gurrumul’s family drives the agenda of what we are trying to do. The more that we can engage with non indigenous people and share language and identity from a remote place in Australia and a remote group of people, with a mainstream audience, the more Australia will own a unique identity. We constantly strive for the ultimate collaborative cross cultural union.”

As a small boy Gurrumul was not only influenced by the traditional music of his clan but by the gospel music he heard every Sunday at the local Methodist church. ’The Gospel Album’ is a re-imagining of the spiritual songs that came to north-east Arnhem Land via Christian missionaries and contains many songs that have been passed on through generations of Indigenous communities, as well as stunning Gurrumul originals.

’The Gospel Album’ reached #1 on the AIR Chart and #3 on the ARIA Albums Chart and has been warmly embraced by fans and music critics, preceding a sold out national tour through July and August.

Next on the agenda for Gurrumul is a long-awaited tour of Japan for two special shows. This is significant as Gurrumul feels a great affinity with any community that has such a strong cultural connection, and he has been keen to visit for some time. After Japan he has one exclusive show in Singapore, before heading home to Elcho Island.
