Glam’s Guide To The Adelaide Events You Need To Check Out This August

It’s officially behind us … almost. We’re talking about the final month of the year that we can to trend those fashionable trackies and spend our dollars sitting in cafes drinking hot beverages. Yes, August is finally here, bringing with it the last drag of our not so dreary cool patch. While we’re still clinging onto our charming winter scarves and pulling up our socks, we have a ton of things to keep you from sitting on the soggy wet grass.

Let’s begin with a couple of things that are carrying over from July shall we:

July 15 – August 10 Adelaide’s Guitar Festival presents ‘Guitars In Bars’ Spreading itself out over a four-week program, Guitars in Bars is taking the Adelaide Guitar Festival to the pubs, clubs, bars, restaurants and exhibition spaces across South Australia. Bringing South Australia’s venues alive with rock, jazz, blues, folk and more, Guitars in Bars is an accessible lead up to the big show, The Adelaide Guitar Festival.

July 15 – August 7 Umbrella: Winter City Sounds Because if one music event in Winter wasn’t enough, Adelaide is also running Umbrella: Winter City Sounds. The Adelaide’s CBD has never seen more music before, ever! We’re really earning that badge as a UNESCO City of Music…

And now looking ahead:

August 1 – DEW Open Day + FREE COFFEE! For the love of good coffee (and severe sufferers of Mondayitis), DEW on Hindley St are celebrating their 6 months anniversary. DEW’s Open Day is an excuse to check out their co-working space out back, with a whole day of free desk hire on offer, free goodies and FREE coffee from their shiny, new coffee machine. August 1 – 31 SALA Festival The ‘South Australian Living Artists’ (SALA) Festival returns for it’s 19th consecutive year, with their biggest offering of local talent yet. Through visual styles – sculptures, photography, paintings, mixed media and hand crafted jewels, for the course of August, SALA will pack out venues across the State. A particular emphasis this year is being placed on Goodwood Rd which we should note, as the strip hosts an eclectic mix of art across various locations, all nicely found as part of The Goody SALA Trail.

August 2 – Paige Rowe Summer Runway Launch Brought to you by the creators of Royal Croquet Club and The Alpine Winter Village (yep, that’s the Little Miss Group), Paige Rowe’s Summer Runway Launch is the social cat-walk-astrophe you cannot miss. GLAM Adelaide have our eyes on this exclusive invite only event so make sure you watch this space or follow our Instagram for the low-down on exclusive prints, luxurious fabrications and exceptional designs that will feature.

August 3 – Sally Phillips Spring/ Summer 2016/17 Collection Launch Hold up peeps, this one’s another invite only. But breathe easy girls, we’ve got it covered for you. Launching a seasonal 60-piece collection, this Adelaide based label are all about being unique and giving you the sublime and unparalleled shopping experience. Don’t worry, you’ll get your first glimpse at the collection on Glam Adelaide the following day or follow us on Instagram for some cheeky snaps on the night.

August 4 -18 Joshua Smith’s Beauty of Decay Exhibition “To appreciate what you see before you now, you need to understand what it took to get to this point.” Internationally renown Joshua Smith debuts his first ever Adelaide exhibition of miniature sculpture and stencil artist. His works depict an imagined story of a world based around filth, git and remnants left behind by people on the street, but ultimately reflect upon things which fascinate him about urban environments the world over. The former Espionage Gallery man returns to exhibit at DEW, 101 Hindley Street, for most of the month.

August 5 – Bremerton’s Winemakers Dinner You saw the word wine and thought you’d better have a look didn’t you? Well, you’re totally right. This dinner, hosted by Jock Zonfrillo’s incredible Restaurant Blackwood, will feature 6 courses paired with museum wines, new releases, pre-dinner drinks – we are so there!

August 6 – Pinot Palooza Calling all wine enthusiasts! The annual Pinot Palooza is back at the Queens Theatre. Grab your tickets, practice your swirling technique and take up our challenge to wear all white at an event where everything being served is red. We just want to see what will happen

August 6 – Intercontinental Bridal Expo To all the Mrs. Erin Samuels out there (yes we did just use a mean girls reference); put your sassy, demanding, inner bridal, stressed out, princess bottoms on the bench and take a break from doing all the hard research. Intercontinental Adelaide is hosting the must go to event ‘Bridal Expo’.

August 6 – Thrive Festival Yoga, music, gourmet foods, meditation, entertainment, organic wine. If your nodding your head in agreement as you’re reading this then you need to click ‘Going’ and join in The Market Shed as they host ‘Thrive’, Adelaide’s ultimate winter festival.

August 6, 13 & 20 Patch Theatres ‘Emily Loves to Bounce’ Spread the word Adelaide mums, dads, uncle and aunts. This one’s for the little ones. South Australia’s Patch Theatre Company will be bringing the smiles to the Odeon Theatre in Norwood with the much loved production Emily Loves to Bounce. Filled with laughs, wonderful music, colourful sets and a world full of balls and boxes, this magical production is a perfect way to see the winter off.

August 6 & 7 – Sweet Tooth Fair Yes, you read that right… an entire weekend dedicated entirely to all things delicious and all things sweet! Flinders Street Market is holding its special ‘Sweet Tooth’ event, with over 80 stalls filled with fabulous dessert, chocolate, cake any many more goodies. Just like Willy Wonka’s Factory. This is not the time for self restraint.

August 6 & 7 – Science Alive! With inflatable planetariums, robotics, astronomy sessions and all kinds of awesome, this is going to be one fun science expo. Over 70 exhibitors will cram the Showgrounds with plenty of interactive, dynamic, fun and educational things to do.

August 6 & 7 – Primo Estate’s ‘Winter Wild Lunch’ The chefs at Primo Estate are putting on a feast! Toasty wood ovens, charcoal rotisseries and newly released 2014 vintage are all on the list for this years ‘Winter Wild Lunch’, being held at their cellar door.

August 7 – The Big Lunch Addressing South Australia’s big issues and supporting homeless and disadvantaged men and women, The Big Lunch returns to the Adelaide Central Markets for its sixth year with a gourmet feast prepared by some of SA’s well-known foodie favourites. All money raised will support ‘The Big Issue’.

August 9 – Adelaide Fashion Festival Launch We can’t wait to see what is revealed at the Adelaide Fashion Festival Launch! Without assuming too much, we having a sneaking suspicion we’re going to catch a glimpse of a few up-and-coming designers along with a full program brimming with international heavy hitters. South Australia’s fashion industry is hot property right now, after all. Invite only.

August 9 – The Sound of Music Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So-La-Ti… you know what comes after that. The world’s favourite musical – The Sound of Music will debut at the Festival Theatre (and you totally need to get your ticket).

August 10 – Maserati Reveal Solitaire Automotive has big news. As South Australia’s exclusive Maserati dealer, they are set to make the exclusive reveal of the Maserati Levante. Whoops, did we just let the cat out of the bag? Invite only event.

August 11 –  Ferrari Adelaide Showroom Relaunch
Sticking with the automotive theme, Ferrari Adelaide will be relaunching with a grand reveal – the Ferrari California T Handling Speciale. Invite only event.

August 11 – Shaw & Smith Wine Dinner @ Jolleys Boathouse Off the back of their beautiful Mount Lofty House Dinner, the crew from Adelaide Hills wine mecca Shaw & Smith have chosen another culinary institution to partner with for their August degustation. 5 courses matched with wines with a roaring gas fire to keep the room toasty. Say no more.

August 11 – 14 – Adelaide Guitar Festival Once Guitars In Bars is done, the Adelaide Guitar Festival will begin in earnest with the now annual ode to the world’s favourite instrument; the guitar. The Punch Brothers and The Panics are just a taste of what the Adelaide Festival Centre will be serving up in this packed three days.

August 12 – Malachi Empire presents The Wildflower Collection Highly sought after local couturist Sok Hoffman is launching her new bridal Wildflower Collection and Couture show and we’re invited (silent scream of joy!). Hosting a unique runway at The Lakes Resort, featuring 21 of her stunning bridal gowns, The Wildflower Collection has been 2 years in the making with tickets available at Malachi Empire online now.

August 12 – Fashion Friday presents Rundle Street East Wipe your social calendar clear girls and boys, it’s Fashion Friday. Enjoy French Champagne and a 3 course luncheon at Coal Cellar + Grill at the Hilton Adelaide, as the fashion destinations of Rundle Street East present back-to-back fashion parades.

August 12 – 14 – Finders Keepers Market Featuring over 200 independent designs and art stalls by local makers, as well as appreciated favourites in Australia’s design industry, live music, bars, fresh coffee and food trucks, this inaugural Adelaide hoorah is here to regale.

August 13 & 14 – Langhorne Creek Cellar Treasures Weekend Ok, so we’ve gone a little wine crazy this month, but how could you not. This event promises to be so good, they’ve reserved an entire weekend for it! Cellar doors are opening up across Langhorne Creek for this epicurean weekend devoted entirely to wine. Get your treasure hunting boots on taste the regions finest vintages across 9 destinations.

August 14 – Curry and Cabernet Whistler Wines will be hosting the cutest, cosiest little block party, catered by the team from ‘Beyond India’. Warm curries, crackling fires, live music and Cabernet. How could you not be tempted?

August 14 – Sunday Funday @ Gibson Wines What could be more fun than drinking wine? How about drinking wine with some free live music on one of the most idyllic porches in the Barossa. That’s exactly what you’ll be doing at Gibson Wines. And you’ll probably grab a cheese platter as well…

August 15 – 21 & 22 – 28 Pop Ups SA Love local? Love handmade? Make a bee line for these twice monthly market stalls being hosted at Westfield Marion (which is also getting a big redevelopment) and Tea Tree Plaza, hosted by Pop Ups SA.

August 19 – Coonawarra Wine Tasting Roadshow We say wine roadshow and suddenly you’ve got chills coming down your spine. The Coonawarra wine region are loading up the ute and coming to The Sanctuary at Adelaide Zoo with hundreds of wines, tastings and the opportunity to chat with the winemakers. At the Zoo! Come on people!

August 20 – Rock Quiz @ Prancing Pony Head to the Hills and join the Pony crew for the return this very special celebration of Rock. QuizMaster Extraordinaire Mark Liebelt (if you know him, you’ll know the title is warranted) will host a music challenge beyond your wildest imagination, coupled by 2 courses of Pony Plank Food to share with your table. Rocky Horror will be the theme for the night, an air guitar competition will be included and prizes will be on offer. We hear you shiver in antici….pation.

August 23 – American Whiskey Mastercall @ Hains & Co. American Whiskey Ambassador and Enthusiast, Erica Richards, will walk you through the finer points of Rye & Bourbon, simultaneously pouring Bookers, Bakers, Basil Hayden’s, Knob Creek Bourbon, Knob Creek Rye and Knob Creek Barrel Proof. Red Star Catering will do their best to keep your palate primed for the next taste with food on offer as well. The Admiral may make an appearance as well!

August 23 – Cheese After Dark The Smelly Cheese Shop at Adelaide Central Markets  will be pulling out all the stops for their next Cheese After Dark masterclass. From 6:30pm – 8:30pm, match a selection of their cheeses with the fabulous wines from Battle of Bostworth & Spring Seed Wines from McLaren Vale. You had us at cheese!

August 26 – 21 Glasses Lunch The weather is getting warmer, which makes the view overlooking the Holdfast Shores Marina even more enticing. Esca will be hosting David Lehmann of David Franz Wines from midday for an afternoon degustation which will be supporting the Daw House Hospice Foundation.

August 27 – Irish Race Day They say any luck is better than the luck o’ the Irish, but in this case it’s definitely not. Morphetville Racecourse is keeping us amused this Irish Race Day with plenty of entertainment on and off the track, live music; and keeping in line with strict protocol, a pint of Guinness to commence your Irish affair.

August 28 –  Boucle De Burbs Err, Boucle De what? Boucle De Burbs, a tour of Adelaide’s most infamous backstreets and alleyways – by bike! Join the crew from Treadly Bike Shop in this six hour course of some of the best cafe’s and snack spots of Adelaide and the inner suburbs. Then head to Little Bang Brewing in Stepney for the after party.

August 28 – Winter Food & Wine Festival The National Wine Centre’s ‘day of day’s returns as South Australia’s premier food & wine regions converge for a showcase like no other. Experience the incredible diversity of SA in the heart of the city as 35 wines from SA’s main wine regions, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley and Coonawarra are paired with a decadent menu created by SA food producers showcasing their fresh, seasonal and local produce. Bookings are essential as spaces are limited.

August 30 – South Australian Oyster Dinner With Sean Connolly Join the main man himself at his flagship restaurant for an evening of Oysters featuring 4 courses matched with drinks, and Oyster experts on hand to teach you everything you’ve ever wanted to know about oysters. Like why do Sonja Kruger’s lips when pursed look like an oyster and should we be concerned that she’s giving oysters everywhere a bad name?

August 31 – Reschke Empyrean Vertical Dinner Recent Restaurant & Catering Awards Hall Of Fame inductee, Georges on Waymouth, are hosting Reschke’s first ever degustation, with a vertical tasting of their awarded Empyrean, Cabernet. Head Chef Brent Potuszynski has put together a special five course degustation menu, complementing the Empyrean, which has was named ‘Museum Red Wine of the Year’ at the ‘South Australian Wine Awards 2011 & 2012’.
