Comedy star Lawrence Mooney has graced our media for over two decades now, and this morning graced Glam with his company. We chatted about his past, his love for our humble state and his new Fringe show ‘Surely Not?’

We know Lawrence from his stand up work, various radio shows and TV shows such as Agony Uncles, Spicks and Specks and Dirty Laundry Live. He’s undoubtedly a funny man (they keep letting him back of TV after all!) but when we met with Lawrence yesterday morning we were intent on learning more about what lead him to where he is now.

After learning our lesson with comedian Jimeoin, we thought it best to actually confirm with him some of those fun facts floating around the internet, that in his instance seem too ridiculous to be true. For example: did he actually work as a customs officer, a perfume salesman AND a window cleaner? As it turns out, all true facts. Lawrence told the common ‘means to an end’ tale, before finding his true comedy calling.

This is now the fifth year Lawrence has performed at the Adelaide Fringe Festival. His show last year entitled ‘Lawrence Mooney: Stupid Liar’ was a huge success with a strong focus on the male species, and his views on the downfalls of them as a whole. When you combine this with the insight ‘Agony Uncles’ the tv show he starred in gave to the inner workings of the male brain, we at Glam thought it seemed there is one very logical path that Lawrence should travel down in the future. We suggested he should put pen to paper and write to women of Australia directly and tell us all we need to know about the men in our lives!

Lawrence said although it does seem logical, the thought had not crossed his mind before now. So hey, if you see a ‘Dear Women of Australia, By Lawrence Mooney’ pop up in the next copy of Cosmo, you know who the masterminds behind it were! He did manage to give us the hot tip though, he believes that men pretend to be commitment-phobes but truly they’re all soft, mushy and just as deseperate to be loved as the women-folk. Ladies take note.

What IS on his mind for the future however, is Dirty Laundry Live. Lawrence’s own comedy panel TV show recently wrapped up it’s second season and they are awaiting confirmation for the third. We tried to get the inside scoop and be the first to announce season three of Dirty Laundry Live on Glam Adelaide, but unfortunately Lawrence was none-the-wiser. We will say this: the future is looking bright.

So, to delve into the Fringe, and what ‘Surely Not?’ is all about. Lawrence told Glam that the past year’s crazy events (from ISIS to Ebola) have lead to him saying ‘Surely Not?’ so very often. We couldn’t agree more. This madness also lead him to further revelations about life, and death and consequently to us both to quoting Dead Poet’s Society (carpe diem guys, carpe diem.)

When we asked what he loved about South Australia, his answer was so much more than the standard ‘You make a nice red’ (which by the way is a completely accurate and acceptable response.)

He told us that he adores the passionate pride we take in our food and wine culture. That he believes that the pleasure we, as a state, derive from the arts and entertainment culture also leads us to be quite an intellectual group. He then managed to contrast this incredibly interesting outsiders perspective on our state as a whole by saying how he also loves that we openly embrace our Bogan culture (his words, not mine!) He confessed that he is in fact a motorsport enthusiast and a self-proclaimed rev-head.

We chatted back and forth about these concepts and ideas, and we must say it was a very enlightening conversation. Glam loved spending the morning talking about our incredible state in such a different and diverse light, with someone who seems just as passionate about it as we are.

Lawrence Mooney is not only a hilarious comedian who had us in stitches, but a fascinating man. His show runs until March 14th at the Rhino Room. Tickets are selling fast so get in quick to ensure you see this Aussie comic legend.
