Gayby Baby Q&A With Director

The Adelaide premiere of the controversial documentary Gayby Baby will hit Adelaide screens on 1 October with a special Q&A session with director Maya Newell.

The Adelaide premiere of the controversial documentary Gayby Baby will hit Adelaide screens on 1 October 2015 with a special Question and Answer session with director Maya Newell.

Gayby Baby addresses the marriage equality issue from the unique perspective of the children of same-sex partners – a perspective that, until now, has not been heard in the debate. It chronicles the lives of four children raised by same-sex parents.

Having been raised in Sydney by two mothers herself (who recently celebrated their 30th anniversary), Maya Newell has spent the last 5 years filming in the homes of kids and teenagers being raised by same-sex parents across Australia.

The film caused controversy last month when the NSW Government banned its screening in public schools during school hours as part of Wear It Purple Day activities, a day designated to promote tolerance and diversity amongst young people. The ban caused a backlash when it was revealed by Fairfax Media that the ban had been prompted by complaints from parents to Burwood Girls High when none had actually been received.

Despite the interstate public school ban, Gayby Baby has been critically acclaimed and director Maya Newell will attend the 6:45pm Adelaide premiere on Thursday 1 October at the Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas to discuss the film at the screening.

Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased online for the Q&A premiere from the Gayby Baby website.
