Most of us who were anxious during the mid-nineties are well beyond our time as part of the MTV generation. We are now more sophisticated, refined and adult versions of ourselves. We want wine, not overpriced beer at our music festivals and picnic rugs instead of mosh pits.
But when someone from the mid-nineties tours, we’re still up for a storming sing-a-long and we’re much better gig-goers than anyone in their twenties. There’s a statistic somewhere that proves it.
Combining the longing hearts of MTV tragics fro ‘real music’ and the longing of our generation taste buds for good wine (and lots of it) A Day On The Green have gone all out for their November 27 date at Leconfield Wines in McLaren Vale. None other than Garbage, fronted by the still utterly captivating Shirley Manson will headline alongside Australian rock icons The Temper Trap and Adalita, modern pop legends The Preatures (who certainly channel the 90s “We don’t care what you think of us, we’re here to play music attitude) and local muso Tash Sultana.
These will be the Garbage’s first Australian shows since the 2013 Soundwave (which didn’t have wine we should add) and celebrates their acclaimed sixth studio album Strange Little Birds (out now via Liberator Music). To create Strange Little Birds, their first album in four years, Garbage (Shirley Manson, Steve Marker, Duke Erikson and Butch Vig) drew on a variety of influences including albums they loved growing up. Upon its June release, the album debuted at #9 on the ARIA Album Chart and picked up widespread acclaim:
But of course, the classics will also be out in full force with ‘I Think I’m Paranoid’, ‘Only Happy When It Rains’, ‘When I Grow Up’, ‘Stupid Girl’ and ‘Cherry Lips’ sure to be on the set list.
It might be time to grab some tickets, deck chairs and picnic rugs and relive the 90s with some civility. But don’t BYO alcohol. That’s not cool.
