From Theatre to Screen: Short+Sweet Film Festival

The first ever Short+Sweet film festival is seeking submissions, as this festival of short plays moves to film with its first ‘non-live’ festival in the franchise.

In the 16 years since Short+Sweet was first established in Sydney, it has presented over 5,000 new works in theatre, music and dance created by over 3,000 writers. Most of these are in the form of short plays but original stories can be told in many ways and so music and dance have become important elements of the story-telling.

Now, the festival moves to film with its first ‘non-live’ festival in the franchise.

With so many great stories to draw upon, the move to film was only natural, according to inaugural festival directors Ali Crew & Angela Blake – both film and theatre makers who cut their teeth on the Short+Sweet stage.

“It also perfectly coincides with the launch of the first ever Short+Sweet theatre program in the US – in the world epicentre of movies: Short+Sweet Hollywood this September 2016 at the Stella Adler Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard,” says Ali.

“Whether you have a play that you want to adapt into a screenplay or an original idea for a film, Short+Sweet Film Festival want you,” adds Angela.

The festival is now calling for entries from anywhere in the world for its debut year, launching in Sydney and culminating in an international showcase in Hollywood in September 2017. Successful submissions will be considered for 11 festivals around Australia and internationally, including Brisbane, Canberra, Auckland, Wellington, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Manila, Chennai, Dubai and Hollywood. Additional locations will come online in Year 2 of the film festival.

“There are no limits other than your imagination,” says Mark Cleary, founder and executive producer of Short+Sweet International. “There are no restrictions on subject material, how it is created, enhanced or edited. However, in keeping with the Short+Sweet tradition, all films must be 10 minutes or less.”

The Grand Prize winning film will be screened in Los Angeles at the Short+Sweet Hollywood Film Festival in September 2017 but there promises to be many other prizes up for grabs that have yet to be announced.

Submissions close on 31 December 2016. The entry fee is $20 with more details available on the Short+Sweet website.
