The popular handmade dessert has been named in the starting line up for the Balfours Showdown XXXVII (37) on June 29.
Balfours has unveiled a special run of Crows and Power-inspired frog cakes as part of its sponsorship of the football blockbuster.

A limited number of frog cakes will be handmade at Balfours’ Dudley Park bakery to be made available at Adelaide Oval on gameday.

Besides the frog cakes, Balfours will also continue with its popular special line of team-coloured Showdown donuts, while Balfours pie and frog cake mascots as well as promotional brand ambassadors will be enlisted on gameday.
A “where’s froggy” interactive social media campaign is also running on Balfours’ facebook page https://www.facebook.com/balfoursbakery.

This will include photos of frog cakes in iconic places across Adelaide, encouraging people to guess the location to win prizes.

“The excitement for the Balfours Showdown really begins to build all through the week leading up to the bounce,” Balfours Category Brand Manager Michael Blake said.

“Most of our sponsored brand activities occur within a short timeframe so it’s a lot of planning for an intense one-week execution.”

Balfours is one of South Australia’s most well-known brands.

Established in 1853, Balfours’ traditional recipe pies, pasties, sausage rolls, custard tarts, frog cakes and other treats are sold throughout convenience stores, supermarkets, schools and sporting venues.

Balfours supports numerous community initiatives and events, and became the official sponsor of the Showdown in 2005.

“Balfours has enjoyed a long running association with the Showdown,” Mr Blake said.
“The Balfours Showdown is a much loved South Australian tradition and therefore an excellent fit with our brand values and heritage.

“We decided to up the ante for this Showdown and bring in team-inspired frog cakes for the first time to add another element of fun to our sponsorship.”

Balfours began making its icon frog cake back in 1922 and it has since become a favourite treat. In 2001 the Balfours Frog Cake was recognised as a South Australian Heritage Icon by the National Trust of Australia.

The frog cake comprises of a delicious sponge cake and rich cream covered with fondant. Originally green, it has undergone several variations over time including exclusive seasonal one-off runs such as Easter ‘chicks’ and snowmen.
