For their final show in the Magic Mirror Spiegeltent, Vika and Linda gave their audience everything they expected and way more. The backing music was provided by Chris Bekker on bass, the well known Peter Luscombe on drums, and Carolyn Oates ably covered for regular guitarist Dion Hirini, who is in hospital.

They opened with the very upbeat Smells like Rain, one of  several pieces by Paul Kelly including the tender My True Love Hath My Heart, a sonnet written by Sir Phillip Sydney which Kelly set to music. The duo have the ability to completely change the mood with their own unique style, energy and enthusiasm brought to the fore in the rousing gospel song I’m on My Way by Mahalia Jackson. Vika introduced another gospel piece which was written by a ‘rock n’ roll’ nun, called (I think) Living in the Dark. I’m going to try and track it down as whoever wrote it. It’s a rocking number as well as thought provoking and I’d certainly like to hear the Vika and Linda version again.

In a performance that sadly lasted only an hour, we were taken on a wonderful musical ride through a wide range of musical styles and composers. Everything was performed with consummate skill and passion as Vika and Linda showcased their individual vocal talents. Vika’s stunning vocals, her power and range are incredible and are beautifully complemented and balanced by Linda’s often more gentle approach. But when they harmonise – that is just something else all together!

I have a secret hope that their appearance in the Fringe might have been them ‘testing the Adelaide waters’ for a much longer show in the near future. Keep your fingers crossed.
