Ruth Wilkin’s one woman cabaret Tribute is a clever, funny parody of Tribute shows, in this case the person being tributed is an unnamed pop star. It could be Miley, Britney, Madonna, Bette or any well known female you can think of, or an amalgam of all of them.
Wilkin dissects the pop star life story into a formula that can somehow be attributed to the whole collection of famous ‘beautiful people’. Her song parodies are well written, with melodies that could allow them to exist as ‘proper’ songs of the genres they are parodying. Frozen and Tangled would kill to have the Academy Award nominated song from the pop star’s animated feature about the llama who loses her little red hat.
Everything dealing with fame and tribute shows is sent up nicely by Wilkins, who even has a friendly ‘dig’ at Fringe acts.
Wilkin is funny, charming and has a wonderfully wicked way of looking at things. Tribute is indeed a tremendous tribute to this lovely lady’s talent.
