Fringe Review: The Naked Magicians

Magicians Christopher Wayne & Mike Tyler promise a strip and they do, indeed, deliver on their promise after a lot of mirth and magic that’s more impressive than their toned bodies.

This comical duo have their patter down pat and their pants by their ankles, delivering a nicely paced show filled with astounding magic and cheeky adult humour. These are no amateurs, having traversed the globe fine-tuning their art over many years.

The comedy begins on entering The Peacock room at Gluttony, where the sparsely furnished stage features a padlocked box, a desk and a naked blow up doll. The duo bound on stage fully clothed and proceed to amuse and bemuse with seemingly impossible tricks, beginning with a game of “catch the cock” that results in them revealing the title and character names of a virtual porn show from a sealed box, all chosen by random audience members.

There’s just enough smut and filth to titillate, but it’s all in good fun and centred around each feat of magic. Wayne & Tyler never take things too far and are careful not to embarrass or intimidate anyone despite the high level of audience participation required. They’re fun, funny and shameless, with no weak tricks up their sleeves.

Despite the skilled magic, The Naked Magicians are more comedy than illusion. There are laughs aplenty from start to finish and, while there may be a beast in the hat, this time it’s most certainly not a rabbit.
