There were a variety of kung fu styles on display in this one-night only demonstration of skill and stamina. Nine martial artists from China graced the stage with an occasional interpreter and some minor audience assistance, set to a modern Asian musical score.
The action moved from sequence to sequence, often choreographed like a dance to feature stunning flips, simulated fighting, nunchucks, swordplay and other expected routines.
The star of the show, however, was Master Lee, whose demonstrations of pain control sometimes belonged more in a circus sideshow than here. His daredevil stunts ranged from jumping barefoot on broken glass to body piercing, stopping a fan with his tongue, impaling himself and, most impressively, karate chopping rocks in two.
The cast demanded audience applause too often, rather than letting it happen naturally. The presentation was by no means slick, but the action was the focus and on this front, they succeeded in abundance. Country Arts SA has been touring this show throughout South Australian regional centres, however the run is now finished.
