With some top quality shows from overseas and inter-state appearing in this year’s Fringe, it’s heartening to see that Adelaide has some home-grown talent holding their own. Ben Saunders is one such talent.
Usually hiding from the spotlight as a Musical Director, Saunders has decided to take the leap from the orchestra pit onto the stage to perform a solo cabaret show – with wonderful results.
Quietly Crapping My Daks is a fun-fest of quirky, funny songs, many of them written by Saunders himself – with a couple of Tim Minchin’s thrown in for good measure. The audience are treated to hints on how to put on a cabaret show (largely thanks to that huge cabaret expert, Google), including an hilarious song about the ten songs that must not be sung in a cabaret show. Saunders then proceeds to give his views and tips on love – gaily flouting the number one rule of Cabaret: don’t use ‘love’ as the theme for a cabaret show.
Saunders’ style is nicely laid back and shows a delightful sense of humour, putting his audience immediately at ease. His self-deprecation and humility fare well in this very successful debut.
After seeing this show, Ben Saunders certainly has no reason to crap his daks, quietly or otherwise.
