Fringe Review: One Act Comedy Spectacular

For the first production from Verendus Theatrical the show was a winner. Mostly it lived up to its billing of ‘Over two hours of Fun’ (program cover).

I thought the Ugly Duckling by A A Milne  would have benefited from some editing, as it dragged somewhat and like the curate’s egg, was good in parts. Wanted – One Groom  by Claudene Rease, is built on a very odd premise of advertising for a groom for your daughter. It would have been funnier with a little more pace to the lines as it relies on misunderstandings and the interplay between the characters.

The final play, Streuth had me in stitches. The play is about all the things which can go wrong.  From the very start things go awry as the curtain closes only seconds after it has opened, leaving an actor stranded on the wrong side. Then the ‘corpse’, which has been forgotten, is dragged on stage. The French doors won’t open so the entrance is made via the fireplace. The cast forget their lines and then start up again in the wrong place. The posh lady speaks like a common servant and vice versa and on and on!

I couldn’t help but remember the numerous Fringe shows I’ve seen where things like this and worse happened in productions which were meant to be serious or in comedies where the scenery falling down was not meant to be part of the action.

The standouts were the MC MC Sporran (sic), magician Jon McKay, all the players in Streuth and ventriloquist David Salter plus the very talented ‘Special Guest Comedian’ – you’ll have to see it to find out who that is. I recommend it.
