Comedian Nath Valvo brings his new show Not In This House to the Garden of Unearthly Delights as part of the 2017 Adelaide Fringe Festival.
As the show title suggests, Valvo’s set centres on the dealings of family and the expectations loaded onto him, in particular whether or not he’s ready for a child now he’s over thirty years old and in a long-term relationship.
Valvo came across as a seasoned Fringe performer with the noises outside of the Campernile tent and the expected late comers written into the show, creating a fairly casual and approachable feel to his performing style right from the opening lines. It successfully created a set up that used the traditional Fringe interruptions as another layer to the humour rather than attempting to dismiss them and work over the noise.
Valvo’s comedy has developed for a much wider audience with the majority of the set containing highly relatable topics, such as pressures to marry and provide grandchildren. This built an effective contrast for the R-rated side humour and subtle political points, and provided plentiful call back moments that Valvo neatly used to control the pace of the dialogue.
He has a lot of energy on stage. There is a physical side to his performance as he doesn’t ever stand still throughout the show. He adds moments of joyful overacting, especially in facial expressions, to wonderfully emphasise and build distinct differences in the characters mentioned during his set.
Valvo is a skilled entertainer and writer with his comedy. The show has been well developed and squeezes a heap of laughter for a wide audience into an hour long show.
