Katie Noonan and circus troupe Circa’s Love Song Circus is a powerful and emotional look back into Australia’s convict history. Through a mix of magical vocals and acrobatic, Noonan and Circa tell the stories of the first female convicts in Australia.
It’s clear that Noonan has put a lot of work into this project researching the stories of Australia’s first female convicts and putting them into song. Accompanied by a talented string quartet, double bass and guitar player, Noonan’s songs are moving and her unique vocal performance showcases why she is one of Australia’s greatest singer-songwriters.
Three female acrobats from circus troupe Circa provided a visual element to the show, emphasising the theme of the performance; the power and strength of the women who came to Australia.
Not all acrobatic segments were equally impressive, and opening night nerves niggled their way into some of the sequences, with some acts not going to plan. However, those that involved aerial slings were beautifully matched by Noonan’s folk music.
The only downside is the layout of the venue. The Paradiso Spiegeltent doesn’t allow everyone in the audience to truly receive the whole experience. As Noonan is at the piano, those sitting on the left-hand side of the tent struggled to get a glimpse of the singer, who is blocked by the string quartet. Thankfully she did stand up for two songs and the emotional connection she conveys through her voice is enhanced when you see her.
This is a brilliant performance that draws attention to a piece of history that could otherwise have been neglected. Katie Noonan and Circa’s Love Song Circus is a treat for the ears and soul, giving life to the stories of many brave women.
