Kate Miller-Heidke returned to Adelaide for a one night only performance in the Spiegeltent at the Garden of Unearthly Delights.

Miller-Heidke is a spectacular performer. Her unique range of singing styles was all on show and incredible to experience. There was a casual feel to her stage presence making all of the humour and the tension in some of her darker lyrics more approachable.

The show was crammed into the tight sixty minute schedule, which didn’t allow much time for casual banter or interaction with the audience. Miller-Heidke still cleverly snuck in slices of comedy with the introduction of songs but otherwise she belted through a wide range of her songs, both old and new. This did make for an intense musical performance with the variations between pop, folk, and other styles sharper and more sudden. However, her charisma on stage took the edge of the quick changes in song mood.

Miller-Heidke still made time for her fans by including songs requests in her set, which were made in advance and aided the smooth flow of the show. This emphasised the openness of her as a performer and added to her casualness on stage. She performed alongside her partner, Keir Nuttall. He was a wonderful addition to the show, which at points made it feel like we were able to peer inside one of their jam sessions and experience the newer songs in a raw form.

Kate Miller-Heidke’s show was loaded with quirks and highlighted her impressive skills as a singer, performer and song writer. It was a pleasure to experience firsthand even with the very short stage time available.
