Jeff Green is an award winning British comedian who has been appearing in Australia through stand-up, radio and television for almost two decades. Green is in Adelaide for the world premiere of his new show Happy Hour.

Happy Hour is a highly personal show with many reflections into Green’s life appearing as the key stories while he explains what he considers to be ‘happiness’. He presents the monologue at a smart, regular pace that gets the audience thinking while laughing.

Green is a truly seasoned performer. The structure of his show is perfectly timed with the flow of his stories keeping a smooth transition between the topics of happiness. He is very comfortable on stage and delightful to watch perform. He was able to work easily with a fairly quiet crowd and maintained a joyful enthusiasm through the entire set.

The production is generally light-hearted in its comedy with swift political, personal and rude comments snuck in to neatly underline the performance. The show does fall well outside of the PG rating given to it in the Adelaide Fringe guide. The topics of sex and lots of swearing feature throughout the show and Green presents the topics in an effective manner so they don’t feel taboo or out of place in the comedy.

The Nova cinema is a comfortable setting for a Fringe comedy show. Green looked at ease on the stage with the small microphone leaving his hands free to accentuate the comedy. It did have a bit of a comfortable lecture feel to it which worked in Green’s favour for any of the crowd interaction. The relaxed setting has excellent sound compared to some of the interference that occurs in more open venues.
