Shows with a singular performer can take many different forms and place great emphasis on the quality of their talent. Louise O’Dwyer’s How’s Your Acting Going? explores the actor’s place in the world from the external view of those friends and family who ask pesky questions about her career. This production blurs the line between performer in a unique way that will entrance some and alienate others.

O’Dwyer is comfortable on The Lounge stage from the moment she enters. Each character she portrays is clearly and cleverely defined by costume, voice, posture and presence. She moves through these calmly never rushing her costume changes and completing them in full view of the audience. Here O’Dwyer exposes herself as the actress floating in between the characters – sometimes speaking directly to the audience out of character. This makes the performance fresh and open in a surreal way. As the show goes on her characters begin to blend with her own self and deeper meanings begin to be explored.

Tim Ratcliffe’s staging is simple but effective, working well with the lighting design to create pockets of light and mood. The audio also served to add to the overall atmosphere.

This style of performance is certainly not for everyone. O’Dwyer’s casual approach may be enough to put some audience members off, but the Fringe is about experiencing something slightly different to the norm. With that in mind, this is a performance piece to be experienced.
