Fringe Review: Frisky and Mannish – Extra Curricular Activities

If you’re seeking a belly laugh, or sensational pop music, it will be near impossible not to laugh out loud at the antics of the British musical comedy duo, Frisky (Laura Corcoran) and Mannish (Matthew Floyd Jones).

Formed in 2008, the duo are making their Adelaide performance debut, having found great success three years running at the Perth Fringe World Festival. Their clever mash-ups of modern music are interspersed with banter between themselves and the audience, and while not all songs may be recognised by all punters, there’s nothing to frown about in the cleverness of their tunes.

When not blending music and lyrics from different songs into medleys, they’re turning romance ballads into psycho smut, showing what would happen if Danni Minogue met Gotye, and revealing the outlandish secrets behind how famous duets really work.

Self-described as “popmusicy-seriocomic-mashparodic-stereophonic-LOUD-vaudevillian-sketchcabaret-throwbackcurrent-oldfangled-newfashioned-bapsbotty-infotainment” the duo are raucously funny, with Corcoran in particular demonstrating a stunning voice with an amazing range.

The show is complemented by a well-timed back projection and a combination of live instruments and pre-recorded backing tracks.

It’s fast, furious, and utterly fabulous. A solid show worth multiple viewings.
