With four-part harmonies that would make the cast of Pitch Perfect shake in their stilettos and raunchy comedy that would give other drag queens a run for their money, The Kinsey Sicks are a must-see at this year’s Fringe. We would not suggest bringing your elderly grandma along, though, as this show definitely makes for an awkward family outing. From their controversial song lyrics and synchronised dance moves to Rachel’s saucy behaviour, this show is not for the easily offended or faint-hearted.
Trixie, Rachel, Winnie and Trampolina aren’t your regular lip-syncing drag queens, and they’re definitely not ones to just let you sit in your darkened audience seat and enjoy the show from afar. Oh no, they love audience participation! By bringing the audience into their absurd world, one begrudging young man at a time, it takes them from just characters on a stage to human beings with fully-formed individual personas.
Winnie is a character-driven queen and the (generally) logical one of the group. When things get out of hand, as they frequently do, Winnie brings them back down to earth. With her rich bass tones, she rounds out the harmonies perfectly. Trixie is your glamorous, beauty pageant drag queen, with a bit of a naughty twist! She’s not afraid to let her proper persona down and get a bit risqué. She is everything you wish you could be in your everyday life. Trampolina is a comedy queen, and she shows it. Her seemingly innocent image is frequently shattered by her outrageous mouth. And finally, there’s Rachel, and Rachel is just… Rachel. You’d have to see her to believe!
If you’re looking for something that’s confronting, political, satirical and naughty, with a few lap dances and a sprinkling of public humiliation, this is your show. While the show touches on many issues relevant in our society today – such as a Trump presidency, ISIS and LGBTQIA+ rights – their goal isn’t to make you think too deeply, but rather highlights these issues to turn them into something we can collectively laugh over. Their parodies of songs, such as Waltzing Matilda, Danny Boy, We Are The World, and Natural Woman, is their main drawcard, and they are executed to a remarkably high level.
As The Kinsey Sicks say, there are many different types of drag queens, and their group is a prime example of this. If you’re thinking of buying a ticket, though (which you should be), bring a pillow with you, as without one, the seating in Studio 7 will leave you with a numb behind!
