In any show about Dorothy Parker, wit is to be expected, but to combine that wit with suburb characterisation, panache, expert writing, singing, and yet more wit, adds up to a perfect evening out.
Ayres House State Dining Room provided the perfect backdrop to this evocatively set stage. Attention to detail, down to the yellow legal pad, American chocolates and 1930’s voice, meant that there were no jarring distractions to this wonderful show. Lucy Gransbury, as Parker, performed beautifully in character, grotesquely, drunkenly declaiming and haranguing her obviously expert pianist, Stacey-Louise Camilleri, and the audience in turn. Gransbury has the ability, talent and intelligence to not only create this show, but to present it in such a way that transports the audience into Dorothy Parker’s presence, being entertained by her poems and quotes, with extra material and appropriate songs.
A highlight was the “Winnie-The-Pooh” poem based on Parker’s review and put together as a poem by Gransbury, as a piece that Dorothy Parker would have been proud to call her own. When required, sparkling energy showed through the apparent ennui as Gransbury led her audience through this vignette with humour and style.
