When local Adelaide comedian and performer Mark Trenwith was eight years old, his hero was Mickey Mouse.
If his Fringe show, Disney Guy, is any indication, things have not changed much over the years. Trenwith entertained a modest crowd with stories of his youthful obsession with Disney. Hakuna Matata played over the speakers as the audience found their seats.
Setting the scene, Trenwith shared pictures of his younger self and assorted childhood trinkets – including a hand knitted Mickey Mouse doll, well-loved Disney colouring books, and his treasured Walkman from 1992.
Trenwith explained that after a lonely primary school career, he attempted to ween himself off Disney as he reached high school. He tried to find a new niche (athlete, trouble maker, teacher’s pet), though ultimately alienated himself while trying to be something he was not. After a few awkward years and a few meandering comedy sketches, he slowly accepted himself as a Disney Guy.
I found his fierce energy a little overwhelming for the material, and would have appreciated a more coherent storyline.
Disney Guy is perhaps not the most original comedy act on offer this Fringe season, though Trenwith’s sincerity creates a certain charm. Nostalgic children of the ‘90s and closeted Disney fans are clearly his target demographic.
