You know what they say: “keep it simple, stupid!” Creators Tim Watts and Wyatt Nixon-Lloyd have taken this philosophy to heart in their magnificent puppet comedy, Bruce, and created a performance to rival any of the “big-tent” events at the Fringe this year.
Bruce is a classic boy-meets girl story with a twist. For one thing, the only real character is a piece of yellow foam with eyes and there’s a lot of mystical metaphysical mumbo-jumbo going on as well. It’s absolutely incredible how much action, romance and drama these two guys have been able to pack into such a simple and relatively short show.
Of course, the real star of this show is Bruce himself, but we can’t forget the two men in the black suits who pilot the loveable sponge with such skill and creativity. Using only white gloves, clever lighting and the puppet itself, Tim and Wyatt are able to create a whole world of adventure for our hero to battle through, from the depths of the sewers all the way to outer space!
Their hilarious (and very obviously South Park inspired) accents bring many different characters to life. It’s amazing how versatile this puppet is, turning from a vengeful, one-eyed Russian cop to an upbeat and airy astrophysicist in the blink of an eye.
Bruce is a roller coaster of emotion, drama and intrigue… but let’s be honest, you’ll be laughing most of the time!
