The headline act for Martha Lott’s Holden Street Theatre Fringe season must be top notch and Snuff Box Theatre’s production of Charlotte Josephene’s Bitch Boxer is just that.
In 2012, the London Olympic Games saw females stepping into the Olympic boxing ring for the first time ever: this is the basis of Josephene’s simple and well written script. 21 year old Chloe, having used boxing as a crutch since she was eleven when her mother walked out, is determined to fight the fight of her life – but tragedy and love threaten to intervene.
It is somewhat daunting when one walks into a theatre to find only a black plastic chair placed centre on an otherwise bare stage. But once the show begins, one realises how clever director Bryony Shanahan has been – placing all the focus on Holly Augustine’s performance as Chloe; and what a performance!
Augustine is an absolute powerhouse, giving vitality, supreme energy and a realism to her role that just mesmerises for the entire hour’s duration. She also impresses with her stream-lined physicality; whilst her impression of rapper Eninem is truly delightful. All in all, Augustine’s performance is a knockout!
Bitch Boxer is definitely a ‘must see’ this Fringe season.
