Fringe Review: A Sentimental Journey – the Music of Doris Day

One of the best ways I can think of to while away an hour or so is to listen to some of my favourite tunes being performed by a great singer with a great backing band. A Sentimental Journey is that sort of show. Louise has a great voice and hearing her sing some of Doris’ most famous songs was sheer joy. Accompanied by some interesting patter about Doris’ life and framed against an appropriate slideshow, it was almost over too quickly.

With David McEvoy on piano, Ben Riley on drums and Louise’s husband Sam Riley on bass they covered many of the tunes from her movies (Calamity Jane, Pillow Talk, Moonlight Bay) and some that only came out on record. The minor track which was made famous when Bazz Luhrmann decided to use it in his film Strictly Ballroom was a great hit. The audience also enjoyed the couple of songs where her daughter Chloe joined Louise. In fact there were no misses, all hits.

If, like me, you are a long-time Doris Day fan, or indeed a Louise Messenger fan, this is one you should not miss.
