Late in 1963, overshadowed somewhat by the assassination of President Kennedy, the BBC broadcast the very first episode of a new science fiction television programme that they called Doctor Who. That episode, An Unearthly Child, introduced the great British actor, William Hartnell, as the original Doctor. To those of us Whovians who saw that first episode, he is the ‘real’ Doctor, and to most of us, the ‘only’ Doctor. Such is the loyalty that fans of the programme seem to attach to their first Doctor.
This is the 50th year of Doctor Who, albeit with a long gap between the ‘classic’ years and the ‘modern’ Doctors. Benjamin Maio Mackay runs the Preachrs Podcast, covering all things to do with Doctor Who, and it is he who created, and acts as Master of Ceremonies, for this event. He is joined by Rob Lloyd, who bears a striking resemblance to David Tennant, and Nick Finch.
This is no dry lecture, but it does cover all of the Doctors, including those in films and tele-movies, and how the actors have played them, as well as identifying significant points in the history of the series. The interaction between the three presenters, hilariously throwing in many an ad lib within the scripted presentation, led to further chit chat with a few members of the audience. There were a couple of chances for audience members to come forward and add to the discussion, as well as light hearted quizzes, conducted with more than a little assistance to ensure that the contestant won a bag of, what else, jelly babies.
Although the advertised duration of this event is only just over an hour, you are sure to want to stay long after, talking to the three well-informed and enthusiastic presenters, and admiring the ‘visual aids’: a TARDIS, a Cyberman, a Dalek, and K9.
