The Anzac Centenary this April marks 100 years since Australia’s involvement in the First World War. To commemorate the occasion, an outdoor cinema venue is being set up to host a free screening of Australian World War I film, The Lighthorsemen. Set during WWI, The Lighthorsemen tells the story of the men of the Australian Light Horse unit who were involved in the 1917 Battle of Beersheeba.
Centennial Park in Pasadena will host the outdoor cinema Anzac Tribute on the evening of Tuesday 21 April. South Australian families, friends and children are invited to attend the Tribute, which will be held in Centennial Park’s Derrick Gardens from 6pm.
Australian flags adorning 3,500 memorial headstones, and a light display set on Centennial Park’s Cross of Remembrance, will be a moving backdrop for the Outdoor Cinema Anzac Tribute.
Prior to the screening, people will have the opportunity to take a twilight tour through Derrick Gardens – Centennial Park’s post-war commemorative area for service personnel.
Travelling Red Cross war exhibition Good and Useful Work will also be available for viewing in Centennial Park’s Jubilee Complex throughout the entire month of April (1-31 April). The exhibition traces the history of the South Australian division of the Red Cross through a range of stories, images and objects.
A sausage sizzle and refreshment fundraiser will be hosted by service-related groups with all proceeds going toward their respective organisations. Families are also welcome to bring along picnic hampers.
Centennial Park encourages visitors to bring their own picnic blankets. Centennial Park is SA’s largest cemetery for returned servicemen and women since World War II.

“It’s a time for us to honour, remember and acknowledge the absolute bravery and sacrifice made by Australia’s servicemen and women – not only in World War I, but all conflicts in which Australians have taken an active part.
“Centennial Park’s inaugural Outdoor Cinema Anzac Tribute is a way for all South Australian families, friends and children to join together and pay tribute to those men and women who so bravely served our country during times of war and conflict.
“Centennial Park is delighted to host what will be an extremely moving and memorable Outdoor Cinema Tribute to commemorate the Anzac Centenary.”
