For The Good Of Our Skin; Demystifying The Dermapen

There are few treatments as effective for such a wide range of skin issues as the Demapen with Mesotherapy… wait, what the heck is that? Let us walk you through it.

There’s some nerve-wracking about the idea of getting a facial treatment. Because when we say ‘facial treatment’, we’re not talking about the kind that involves a mud mask and putting slices of cucumber over your eyes (as appealing as that sounds.) We’re talking about medical grade facial treatments, and for many people, that often comes with venturing into unchartered territory. Of course, many of us have considered the possibility, for the majority of people aren’t without skin imperfections that they’d like to resolve, with everything from acne, to pigmentation, to wrinkles.

In early October, SILK introduced a brand new treatment to their lineup, one that’s capable of treating a myriad of skin concerns including acne, congestion, scarring, pigmentation, tone, texture, fine lines, wrinkles, and even stretch marks. Say hello to Dermapen with Mesotherapy.

So what exactly is that?

The Dermapen technology is an advancement in microneedling, the process that involves using needles to stimulate your skin into regeneration mode. Unlike its predecessors (namely, dermal rolling, which is known to require anesthetic), the Dermapen is a device with an adjustable needle head, in which the oscillating system delivers micro-channels into the skin, (and doesn’t require anesthetic.)

The small trauma caused to the skin (whether this be your face or body), generates your body’s automatic healing response. When we have a wound, our body instinctively jumps into action, sending the necessary vitamins, minerals, proteins, etc., to the wound. It also stimulates the production of collagen and elastin to improve the skin’s health, texture, and appearance. It sounds a little scary – needles rapidly pricking into your skin? But in this case, fear not, the needles aren’t causing any permanent damage, and the results are invisible.

After the microneedling, mesotherapy is applied – otherwise known as a vitamin-rich serum. This not only guarantees that the Dermapen glides across your skin, but allows the vitamins to be deeply and easily absorbed through the micro-channels. This is more effective than if the serum were to simply sit on top of your skin, which is slower, and less effective. SILK uses their specially formulated and prescribed hyaluronic acid partnered with a vitamin infusion that is selected based upon your skin concerns, and the desired outcome for your skin.

SILK Dermapen
SILK thoughtfully invited us to try out their new treatment, and experience the results for ourselves. Beginning with a detailed skin analysis, I was provided with a treatment plan focused on achieving my desired skin objectives. They take into account your main skin concerns, and the best way to treat them. As Dermapen with Mesotherapy treats an extensive variety of skin concerns, manager Laura helped me narrow down what I wanted to treat the most.

The skin is made up of three layers: the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. The depth to which the needles go is dependent upon your skin concerns, as different skin concerns sit on different layers of the skin. For example, pigmentation is on the skin’s surface, so the needles don’t need to go in as far. However, for maximum results, deeper micro channeling is required, especially in regards to treatment of texture, wrinkles, and stretch marks.

Personally, my skin is quite congested, acne-prone, and has post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (those pesky dark spots left after you have a pimple), so we decided we wouldn’t go too deeply with the needles but enough to adequately stimulate rejuvenation.

SILK has a variety of vitamin infused serums to apply to the skin, so Laura provided me with a serum of hyaluronic acid, with Vitamin A, C, and E. Hyaluronic acid helps to retain the moisture in your skin. As the treatment can be drying, this infuses hydration into the skin. Vitamin A is the natural derivative of retinol. Retinol not only assists with skin tone and texture, but also pairs beautifully with collagen and elastin, as it helps firm and plump the skin. Vitamin C is for brightening the skin, reducing the appearance of pigmentation, darkness, uneven tone, and discoloration. Vitamin E is your antioxidant protection, helping to keep your skin healthy, strong and protected. Basically, they’re a winning combination for regenerating skin.

Laura started using the Dermapen on my forehead, temples, and nose, as these are the most sensitive, before progressing onto the upper lip, chin, and cheeks. She did them three times, horizontally, vertically, and diagonally, and repeated several times on the chin and cheeks, as the needling was quite shallow. It was a little uncomfortable, but it wasn’t unmanageable and many clients liken it to the feeling of a microdermabrasion.

Laura was very reassuring and encouraging. After the treatment, she applied a sheet mask with copper peptides, zinc, and vitamin B12, to give my skin some additional nutrients to keep it healthy, strong, and protected. She then finished with sunscreen, as the treatment makes your skin quite sensitive.

Afterwards, my skin was pretty red. Redness and sensitivity tends to vary between people, but thankfully, as I had to go out in public, I did not look like a tomato. Laura provided me with post-treatment care instructions. You can only use the SILK purifying cleanser and hyaluronic serum (as a moisturizer) for five days – any other products could cause discomfort, irritation or burning, and you especially don’t want to try anything with AHAS or retinols in them. After the fifth day, your skin will start flaking, and you can use the SILK exfoliant to scrub it away. Although it is recommended to leave your skin be for the first day, I had to apply makeup, and it was advised that I only use mineral makeup for the first 48 hours, as you don’t want to clog your pores, or again, cause irritation. My skin did initially sting a little with the application of the makeup, but it didn’t affect the treatment in any way.

My skin felt very plump, smooth, and glowing afterwards. 36 hours later, the redness has well and truly subsidedand a couple of blemishes have disappeared. I do feel a little dry, but it takes about a month for collagen and elastin to mature, and thus rejuvenate the skin, so within that time you’ll see a noticeable improvement in your skin. I look forward to it!
