Food Review: Sharing Is Caring At Jarmer’s Kitchen With Their New Menu!

From pillowy pockets of gnocchi goodness, to the most heavenly vanilla slice, Jarmer’s Kitchen and their share menu is a must try…

Being the food lovers we consider ourselves to be, here at Glam, if there’s one thing we rate highly, it’s a sharing menu. That’s why when we heard the news that our little Bowden fave, Jarmer’s Kitchen had added ‘Jarmer Share’ to their menu, we grabbed a group of our nearest and dearest and rushed to their wide open doors.

Jarmer's

The delightfully bright and airy surroundings we’re so used to swinging past for a coffee or a light lunch transforms beautifully into a perfect cosy spot for an evening meal. Being a notoriously unfussy group we had no preference with menu choices and left our fate at the hands of the chefs, which, if you ask us, is the best way to go. After all, who knows their menu better than those who create it day in and out?

Our wonderful waiter promised that their aim was to have us so full we rolled out of the building (spoiler alert: they succeeded). Sampling no less than 10 sumptuous dishes, our tastebuds were left tingling. But let’s take you through from the start.

The first dishes of the night were the extremely popular porcini arancini and a light and fresh basil, tomato and buffalo mozzarella salad drizzled with Chris Jarmer’s sticky balsamic. We’ve said it before Glam readers, and we’ll say it again and again; a perfectly cooked and flavoursome risotto ball is a sure fire way to our hearts. With that in mind, Jarmer’s Kitchen is certainly new bae.

Following on the light and fresh theme, out came the king fish and Tasmanian salmon sashimi on soba noodles with a ponzu dressing and crispy fried shallots. Being a massive sashimi fan myself, I could’ve happily had three more serves of this and sat satisfied on cloud 9. The rest of the group agreed.

Next came a dish that, ordinarily, can be somewhat uninspiring, salt and pepper squid. Don’t get me wrong, it can be perfect, but more often than not you what you receive is mushy, gluggy or chewy. But not at Jarmer’s. The light batter was perfectly crisp on the outside, and the squid perfectly tender on the inside. It was all sitting atop a delightful Asian inspired salad that had unexpected pops of flavour, like pineapple and fennel.

The crumbed King George whiting with a house made tartare sauce was simple and wonderful. Not greasy or fatty like you can often find with fried fish and with the abundance of food arriving at the table, we welcomed the lack of chips. We were certainly starting to fill up by this point, which was not ideal, as next up came the pasta courses. One creamy and indulgent potato gnocchi served with mushrooms, porcini sauce, truffle oil, parmesan and fresh herbs; and one rich rabbit ragu tagliatelle (not for the faint of heart).

The gnocchi was an all-round hit, but we’ll admit the group was divided over the rabbit ragu. My half of the table loved the tender and slightly left of centre meat choice… and one half of the group couldn’t stop picturing their baby bunny at home. BUT, we had told Jarmer’s there was nothing we wouldn’t try.

The simplicity of the flavours of the scotch fillet and pork we were treated to (almost) last were stunning. Perfectly roasted potatoes and simple jus accompanied impeccably cooked meats. The addition of a simple braised red cabbage added that pop of sweetness too.Jarmer's Kitchen

When we got to the final, final course we were pretty excited, admittedly. We’d heard the rumours about Adelaide’s best vanilla slice. We’ve even stared at it longingly, through the glass cabinet, praying that cheat day would come around soon. Finally the day of reckoning was upon this slice of heaven. And we’re pleased to confirm that heaven, it was. Dainty crisp filo sandwiched vanilla bean custard that has been folded with light and fluffy whipped cream. Heaven.

It’s great when a chef lets high quality produce speak for itself and that is precisely what Chris Jarmer has done throughout this menu. No dish is drowned in overpowering sauces and the menu isn’t dripping with jazzy words that you have to pretend to understand. It’s great quality food that you want to come back for again and again. Mix that with friendly, knowledgeable and speedy service and you’ve got a story of great success.

It’s somewhere you can definitely take your family to enjoy… we’d recommend just inviting the grown up friends along to truly enjoy the great local wine and cocktail lists.

The Jarmer Share Menu is $60 per person.
