A class of Year 10 art students from Gawler and a 20-year-old sculptor from the Murray Flats are among the winners of the second round of the 2015 SALA Awards, announced in a gala ceremony last night at Government House.
Four awards were given out for achievements in photography, moving image and sculpture, voted on by a panel of expert judges and announced by His Excellency the Governor of SA Hieu Van Le and the Hon John Hill, Chair of SALA.
Multimedia artist Fiona Gardner won the night’s biggest prize, the $5000 Unitcare Services Moving Image Award for artists working in new media, while photographic artist Gary Sauer Thompson won the Atkins Photographic Award, comprising an edition of three A1 giclee archival fine art prints.
Art teacher Adele Turner of Trinity College, Gawler, and her class of Year 10 art students were named joint winners of the Brighton Jetty Classic Sculptures Award supporting Brighton Surf Life Saving Club Inc for young artists aged 15 to 26 years, along with 20-year-old sculptor Joel Zimmermann, of Sedan, with each winner taking home $1000.
Ms Turner and her students won for their series of sculptures on display as part of Trinity College’s SALASIA art exhibition, inspired by the work of Thai sculptor Rattana Salee, while Mr Zimmerman won for “Clydesdale”, a life-size representation of a draft horse constructed from reclaimed scrap metal. “Clydesdale” is on show at the Barossa Regional Gallery in Tanunda until August 31.
The announcement follows round one of the $30,000 SALA Awards which were announced at the launch of the festival’s program on July 3, and included Jason Sims (The Advertiser Contemporary Art Prize), Emmaline Zanelli (Centre for Creative Photography Latent Image Award for an Emerging Artist using Photography), Mark Ryan (OZ Minerals Copper Sculpture Award), Jessica Clark (Rip It Up Publishing Young Artist Award for Best Young Artist 18-30 years), Michelle Willsmore (Adelaide Review Outsider Art Award), Cindy Durant (Country Arts SA Breaking Ground Award for Regional Artists, supported by ABC Local Radio and Adelaide Festival Centre), and Selina Wallace (The Don Dunstan Foundation Award).
The SALA Festival continues across Adelaide and regions until August 31, presenting the works of more than 5000 artists in 610 free exhibitions.
