Glenelg-based Chloe Keen, our feature photographer this week, discovered photography in year 11 at school as both a favourite subject and a hobby. As her skills developed slowly, photography became much more than just a hobby and more like an escape. “I find when I am looking through the lens that’s all I am concentrating on and its great for clearing my mind and making me happy. The last couple of years have been pretty hard at times, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease and photography really helps me get through it. When I am well I am out taking photos, enjoying the world and when I am having a bad day I can look at and edit photos from bed.”
Now starting a small photography business she is proud of how far she has come, and is a keen part of the burgeoning photography community from South Australia which has grown online dramatically over recent years. “I am always looking at what other photographers work, I follow so many on Instagram,” Keen explains.
I get so inspired looking at other photographers work, I find it so interesting seeing how other people capture things. I feel that we are all quite supportive of each other. When I really like someone else’s photos I let them know and others do the same to me.”
Currently studying a Diploma of Counselling and Bachelor of Fine Arts as well as working at a supermarket to try to get her photography business off the ground, she is looking forward to continuing to grow and expand her reputation. “I haven’t done much work in a studio or with portraiture and I would like to delve in to that a bit or even some commercial photography. Until then I am more than happy to keep playing around with South Australian landscapes and capture the beauty that Adelaide has to offer. I love being surrounded by nature; there is so much beauty in it. It is hard to make nature look bad in a photo.”
