Maude Davey has spent her life working in the nude, but if your body is the currency you’ve traded on all your life, what happens when its value diminishes?

My Life in the Nude is more than just a celebration of the naked form; it’s a statement of self-love, self-acceptance and pride, and it explores why many nude artists decide take their clothes off in the first place.

Opening the show while standing confidently on the stage, wearing nothing but a fur shrug and a necklace, Davey declares that there are only two rules in her show: she is the only one allowed to get naked and the audience are encouraged to take photos.

Davey is naturally funny and a little crass. She drops the C-bomb more times than it is possible to count, manages to make burlesque sexy even in a gorilla suit, and is the first person who I have ever heard admit to using mascara on her pubes.

But it’s not all laughs. This is an intelligent and engaging performance. My Life in the Nude will also make you question why society only accepts young, taut bodies? Why can’t we all be beautiful and proud of how we look? Davey is not young, but she proves through a series of songs and provocative dance that she is still beautiful and sexy, and we all can be.

There is plenty of variety as Davey works her way through a range of unusual costumes and characters and, on opening night, featured special guest Beau Heartbreaker who covered a costume change with a hilarious cameo appearance.

My Life in the Nude is bold, fun and unusual. It is part burlesque, part cabaret and part art, and it is quite unlike anything I’ve seen before. Let’s hope Davey carries on creating art for the next 30 years and continues to embrace the beautiful canvas that is her body.
