ff mainLegendary metal band Fear Factory are coming to Adelaide for Soundwave in 2015. The American outfit have pioneered a range of metal styles and genres over their illustrious career spanning almost a quarter of a century.

Speaking to Glam Adelaide from his home in LA, founding member and renowned guitarist Dino Cazares said he’s looking forward to getting back to Australia; in particular, Adelaide.

“I’ve seen so much of Australia; we’ve been about once a year,” he said. “I know Adelaide well. I’ve been there quite a few times. I have some really close friends who live there. I like going to the Asian markets and food places you have there, and I like the markets where you can get fresh fruit and vegetables.”

The band have just come back from India where they played a few shows and were exposed to the different sides of the country.

“We were in India for a little less than two weeks and it was quite an experience,” Cazares said. “We saw from the very rich to extremely poor. Some of it was very sad to see, but we had a great time there and we got treated really well. We were very lucky not to get sick because I’ve heard people can get sick from the food and the water there. We were thankful and had very successful shows. It was cool.”

Dino Cazares is one of metal’s most notable guitarists with an individual style and sound; he’s well known for his fast alternate picking rhythm guitar technique. Having just launched his own guitar design, the Ibanez DCM100 Signature 7-string RGD, Cazares is thrilled to have finally released his custom instrument to the public. “I have been designing my own guitars for years; Ibanez would make me custom guitars to my specifications, but we’ve never released them,” he said. “Now that it’s out, I’m very proud. It’s like a sports athlete having his own signature shoe. It’s getting a great response and excellent reviews. I also have my own signature pickup that goes into the guitar that will be available to the public very soon. I’m really excited.”

Although Fear Factory only just released their album The Industrialist in 2012, the group are already working on a new album but the details are top secret. “We’re in the middle of working a new album right now,” Cazares said. “I can’t tell you much about it because we have record company people who would be very upset because it’s too soon to let the cat out of the bag. But it’s definitely going to be a full conceptual album.”

“We’ve been doing full concept records since 1996 and that’s part of our niche. We’ve always been talking about man versus machine or how technology is adapted into our day-to-day lives. We have always been influenced by science fiction novels and movies and I hope I live long enough to see where technology is going to take us.”

Cazares has recently been influenced by the way technology has changed the way we interact, or rather, don’t interact. “There’s so much stuff you don’t recognise because it’s become the norm. People don’t even look up at each other anymore because they’re always on their cell phones. Whether it’s Instagram, Facebook or Twitter, people are looking at it and not at each other. People don’t even talk anymore. You don’t even spell the whole word anymore,” he laughed.

The new album, like previous albums, is written by Cazares and Burton C Bell; the two founding members who have created the majority of the band’s music. Although there have been many changes to the line-up of Fear Factory over the years, Cazares said this has had no impact on the band’s sound.

“None at all. It’s pretty much just me and Burt. A lot of the guys who have been a part of Fear Factory have not actually played on the records,” Cazares said. “The other members don’t tend to have much of an influence on what we sound like and what we do. Over the years, on the last three records it’s just been me and Burt. Some of the others may have had a small input but haven’t been the creators of the style.”

Soundwave hits Bonython Park on 21 and 22 February but Cazares said he’s not yet planned what Fear Factory will be bringing to the stage.

“I don’t know if we’ll be playing any new stuff off the new record when we’re over there. We’ll come up with a best-of set list but we don’t know yet. We haven’t talked about what we’re going to do live yet because we’re still talking about the record. “We probably won’t even talk about it until January when we sit down and say: ‘What are we taking to Soundwave? What are we not taking? Who are we bringing? Who are we not bringing? Are we going to go see koalas? Are we not going to see koalas?’ These are important questions!” he laughs.
