It’s one of the biggest tickets in town, and certainly the most expensive if you opt for The Complete Experience, but the ultimate question is: will you experience fear or delight from the ticket price of Fear & Delight? What exactly is it all about?

The mystery thickened following a media preview of this deliciously evocative offering in the Adelaide Fringe guide. Punters will have the choice of seeing the show only, or diving right in for a pre-show meal and additional experiences (including prime seating for the show). Whichever package you choose, the exclusive nightclub to follow is included in your ticket price.

With a theme of black and white, the unusual food choices served at the preview featured edible sand, fried grasshoppers, ants and larvae, frog spawn and roasted meal worms, all prepared and presented with exceptional flair and flavour by the internationally renowned Dutch Food Slingers, who have spent the past 15 years creating “spectacular food in special places and within amazing experiences”. It showed. The tastes were sensational, and you would never know you were eating such obscure delicacies if you hadn’t been told, not even as you washed it down with with a cocktail made from holy water, or a vodka on black ice.

Hidden away further down Rundle Road, behind Gluttony, the Fear & Delight compound features a purpose build chapel known as The Devil’s Lighthouse, a staging area for the main show, and open spaces to be used through the night. It comes from the creative minds behind Limbo and Cantina, two big hits last year, but they’re tight lipped about what to expect this time. The complete menu remains a mystery, as do any details of the show which will feature an international cast of dancers and circus performers, backed by the UK DJ/MC duo, The Correspondents.

The best experiences need a little bit of mystery surrounding them and history dictates this one will be a safe bet with some of the most creative and daring artists and chefs joining forces to delight you with a little fear. Face your fear and do it anyway. International chefs, international performers and DJs, and more… The Complete Experience is only $150 which may be the priciest ticket in the Fringe, but far from unreasonable when you consider money spent during the year on more common fare. From the recent media teaser, you won’t regret a moment or mouthful of it.
