In 1947 Christian Dior launched his ‘New Look’. He did so in a Paris struggling with the aftermath of war. With style and panache, he reignited the fashion industry; flaunting clothing restrictions, his haute couture announced the return of beauty and glamour. Paris was again the centre of world fashion. His famous Bar Suit from that first collection and the dress Dior named Adélaïde will soon be on view in Adelaide in the extraordinary exhibition, Fashion Icons.

Made to measure for Adelaide by internationally renowned curator and leading expert in contemporary fashion, Pamela Golbin, Fashion Icons will reveal modern fashion’s incredible journey from 1947 to the present day. Only the collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris has the breadth and depth in its fashion collection to tell this fascinating story. ‘We have a vast collection at Les Arts Décoratifs, and so it is wonderful to be able to select some of our masterpieces and fly them to Adelaide for this exclusive exhibition’, Ms Golbin said.

Visitors to the exhibition will also have the opportunity to delve into the rich fabric of ideas and inspiration behind fashion and haute couture with the Fashion Icons events program. Specially curated by Mitchell Oakley Smith and Alison Kubler, authors of Art/Fashion in the 21st Century, the events program includes engaging panels, hands on workshops and master classes, fashion film screenings, after-hours events and industry talks.
