Bold, bright dresses, crowns and veiled headpieces are predicted to be among the biggest style hits at this year’s Balaklava Cup.

Held on Wednesday, September 2, the Cup coincides with the start of spring. Fashion at The Races Ambassador and Channel Seven weather presenter Amelia Mulcahy said it is a great opportunity to wear vibrant outfits, but warned early September doesn’t necessarily mean warm weather.
“Even though Balaklava Cup heralds the start of spring, there’s a good chance it’ll still be cool at times and that really impacts on outfit choice. You can be wearing the most amazing dress, but if you’re freezing it can ruin your day,” Amelia said.
“I’ll be looking to wear a dress with sleeves, but with a punch of colour because even if it doesn’t feel it, it is spring after all, and when it comes to fashion at the races it’s important to keep the season in mind when choosing your outfit.”
“There are plenty of light, trans-seasonal coats around too, so I’ll be bringing one with me too just in case I feel the chill.”
Amelia will host this year’s Balaklava Fashions on the Field competition, where stylish racegoers can win a share in more than $13,000 in prizes. This includes the Best Dressed Female prize of a $3000 ‘Diva Bracelet’ from Feri Designer Lines courtesy of Emily Santic and a $2000 voucher from BNKR.
The Best Dressed Female winner will automatically qualify for the Fashion at The Races State Final next May, where the major prize is a $25,000 luxury racing holiday for two to Asia.
Adorn Collection milliner Melissa Barnes is crafting an elegant and striking headpiece for Amelia to wear on the day and expects to see crowns and veiled headpieces aplenty.
“Veiled styles emerged on celebrities last spring racing carnival and the trend continues. Metallic headpieces are also on trend and can be worn with a variety of dresses,” Melissa said.
More than 10,000 people are expected to attend this year’s Cup, where popular singer Daryl Braithwaite will perform hits such as ‘Horses’ in a coup for the event.
