The Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market and Prospect Farmers’ Markets will each run scarecrow-making competitions in August and with the winning entries receiving family passes to the Royal Adelaide Show.
The Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market will launch its competition with a workshop by Green Gecko on Sunday, 2 August, as part of its free weekly Kids’ Club activities. The workshop will include handy tips and tricks on how to make an effective scarecrow.
A second workshop will be held on Thursday, 6 August when the Prospect Farmers’ Market launches its competition.
Adelaide Farmers’ Market general manager, Elaine Ratcliffe said the Kids’ Club was an important part of making the market a family experience and teaching kids about a healthy lifestyle.
“Our Kids’ Club activities aim to teach kids about all aspects of healthy and sustainable food, from growing your own produce to cooking, and in general, embracing a healthy attitude towards sourcing and consuming food,” Elaine said.
“We expect the scarecrow competition will be a big hit with our regular Kids’ Club members and we suspect it may attract lots of new faces too. Every farmer needs help keeping birds away from their crops and the traditional way of using a scarecrow can be very effective – and very colourful.”
To enter the competitions at the Showground or Prospect, families are encouraged to bring along their homemade scarecrows to the markets prior to the competition close dates.
The Showground competition will close on Sunday, 23 August and the winning entries will be announced that morning by Gardening Australia presenter, Sophie Thomson.
Entries at the Prospect Farmers’ Market close and will be judged on Thursday, 27 August. Prizes will be presented by local chef and market patron, Rosa Matto.
Scarecrows can be entered into the competitions at one or both markets and entrants will have the option to take their creations home or donate them to a Market farmer.
The Adelaide Showground Farmers Market is open every Sunday from 9.00am to 1.00pm at the Showground in Wayville (via Leader Street). Entry is free and parking is available onsite.
The Prospect Farmers Market is open every Thursday from 3pm until 6.30pm at the Vine Court Plaza adjacent to the Prospect Town Hall on Prospect Road.
