Fancy Spinning a Yarn?

kitty flanaganYarn Spinning with Kitty Flanagan is the opening event of Word Adelaide’s four-day program and will celebrate two sacred Aussie traditions: telling tall stories and going to the pub.

Renowned Australian comic Kitty Flanagan will host the night at the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel on Thursday 15 August.

Yarn Spinning with Kitty Flanagan will be judged by the audience and offers more than $1000 in cash and prizes. It will also feature four guest yarn spinners who will make up their own bit of nonsense…

Guest yarn spinners are:

  • Musician & songwriter John Schumann, best known from his time with the legendary folk/rock outfit Redgum
  • Comedian and actor Eddie Bannon
  • Public speaker and former Triple M radio announcer Sheridan Stewart
  • ABC radio morning show presenter and journalist Ian Henschke

Kitty, who is a regular on Channel Ten’s The Project, said she looked forward to a night of unforgettable yarns.

“I always love coming to Adelaide and can’t wait to hear what people dream up,” Kitty said. “I hope everyone really gets behind this as it should be a lot of fun.”
Yarns can be funny or serious, with each of the finalists given up to eight minutes to tell their tale.
Word Adelaide creative director Jane Intini said the festival’s broad program was developed to offer something for everyone.
“We created Word Adelaide to celebrate the power of – and people’s passion for – words and our language. I’m thrilled we’ll have Kitty Flanagan with us to kick off the entire festival,” Jane said.
Yarn spinning is the telling of Australian stories using traditional Australian vernacular and manners of speech.
“The tradition goes back centuries and covers almost every subject imaginable. Yarns can be completely made up or have a kernel of truth to them,” Jane said.
“Above all, they should be entertaining and capture not just the audience’s attention but also the spirit of what it means to be Australian.
Word Adelaide is a new festival celebrating the power of words. It will be held from August 15-18 at venues across the city.
