DVD Review: The Walking Deceased

In this parody of the TV series “The Walking Dead”, Sheriff Lincoln, his son, and a motley crew of survivors confront a zombies apocalypse .

I have always enjoyed parodies of different film genres, that is until The Walking Deceased.

Sheriff Lincoln, his son, and a motley crew of survivors face the beginning of the end of the world as they confront zombies, meet up and then leave their makeshift camp – a partially destroyed shopping mall.

They journey to the supposed Safe Haven Ranch where they seek shelter along with the owners, a weird and religious older couple. Travelling with the still-human survivors is a lone zombie who begins to see and develop his human side when he hooks up with the female leader.

Walking_DeceasedDVDThere is a fine line between parody and bad acting, unfortunately the balance tipped towards the bad acting in this film.

The film seems to be a family affair with two of the principal actors related (brothers) and one them writing the script. The only accomplished performance came from one of the younger members of the cast, Mason Dakota Galyon, who plays the wise-cracking son of the Sheriff. He dominated every scene he was in and provided the few intentional laughs.

The script was almost devoid of humour, except for some moments that weren’t intended to be funny. However the blame should not just be placed on the script. The acting was substandard, the lines were badly delivered and over the top.

This is director Scott Dow’s first full length film. His direction was heavy-handed and lacked restraint. The film is intended to be a parody of The Walking Dead. It would have been better to have been a straight comedy. I found myself bored after half an hour.

As with all zombie films there was an abundance of rotting flesh and blood but even this seemed to be poorly done – perhaps that was part of the parody?

The Walking Deceased is a film that was initially an intriguing concept that just didn’t deliver. At 88 minutes, it seemed like an eternity!
