DVD Review: Breaking at the Edge

A happily married, pregnant woman begins to fear for her life, witnessing disturbing visions of a murdered girl reaching out for vengeance from beyond the grave.

DVD-BreakingAtTheEdgePregnant and happily married to Ian (Milo Ventimiglia), Bianca (Rebecca Da Costa) begins to fear for her life.

Witnessing disturbing visions of a murdered girl, Bianca thinks she is going mad. Leaning on her husband for support, little does she know the role he plays in her plight. Soon events spiral out of control as the deadly hand of death reaches for vengeance from beyond the grave.

Breaking at the Edge is a fair horror/thriller without being remarkable. What it has going for it is an interesting plot filled with intriguing layers. You are never quite sure where events will lead with some genuine tension felt. The script manages to be somewhat scary even if it borrows heavily from works such as The Ring. The Alfred Hitchcock-style psychological overtones enable it to rise above mediocrity as each mcguffin is slowly revealed.

Although most of the performances are fairly good, Da Costa’s take as the disturbed wife is awful. Barely acting and more reacting to events, her limited range is laid bare. Not once is it possible to care for her character such is Da Costa’s lifeless rendering of it. The cinematography doesn’t help either, with the dark bleakness making for visually dull viewing. No matter how bad these qualities become however, the story continually grabs attention until the shocking denouncement.

Although hardly original, Breaking at the Edge manages to conjure a few scares. It offers proof though that wrong casting choices can sink an otherwise solid enterprise. Hopefully the spectre of miscasting doesn’t haunt the producers of this spooky flick.
