What is there not to love about a robot dog that looks real, can talk, show movies through his eyes and help you connect to the internet?
A.R.C.H.I.E. then finds his way to the small town of Deanewood where Isabel Sullivan has just moved to live with her Uncle Paul, the town’s mayor and owner of the town’s hamburger shop. Feeling lonely, Isabel struggles to find friends until she meets A.R.C.H.I.E. As Isabel and A.R.C.H.I.E.’s paths connect, they become fast friends while helping out Uncle Paul in his race to retain his mayoral supremacy.
While I quite enjoyed this movie, there were a few things that irritated me. It was predictable, but I can understand that considering the genre of the film. The main character, A.R.C.H.I.E., was cute but had a badly animated mouth. Furthermore, he was often filmed from behind so the animations could be avoided.
Of course the big selling point was that A.R.C.H.I.E. himself was voiced by Michael J Fox. A good idea, however if I did not know it was Fox doing the voice I would never had guessed. His delivery and humour were excellent, but not a standout.
The rest of the cast created believable characters and were a tight ensemble cast.
There have been a lot of TV shows and films made about smart, talking animals (starting with Mr Ed, the talking horse). This one is cute, but does not break new ground. On the other hand, if you are looking for an entertaining movie with good moral values for the kids, then this one might be for you.
