Shoppers can now make a donation to support Red Cross’ Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund at any Coles supermarket checkout across South Australia. Coles will be matching dollar-for-dollar every donation its customers make. Red Cross thanks Coles for helping to support the important work of its emergency services teams.

Donations to Red Cross’ Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund support our work in emergencies across Australia and overseas. The funds are used, among other things, to train aid workers and volunteers to be ready to respond as soon as a disaster strikes, as well as to support communities in disaster-prone regions to better prepare.

Red Cross’ Emergency Services SA Manager Jai O’Toole says staff and volunteers have been on the ground at the relief centres since early Saturday. “There were a number of very distressed people arriving at the relief centres over the weekend and we’ve been providing much needed one-on-one psychological first aid to those affected. We’ve also registered – through our Register.Find.Reunite. service – some 750 people who were evacuated from their homes, helping to reconnect them with their loved ones.

“At the moment we have staff and volunteers based at the Golden Grove Recreation Centre and the Willaston Football Club, which have been set up as relief centres,” he says. “Over the coming days we’ll look at how we can support those affected as they begin the process of recovery.”
